John 1 starts out strikingly similar to Genesis 1. “In the beginning…” What was in the beginning? The Word. Who was in the beginning? The Word was God. And yet John starts out saying the Word was with God as well as being God. This could refer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, or it could refer to the Holy Spirit. Either way it affirms what I wrote in relation to Genesis1:26 when God said “Let us make man in our image…” It lays the foundation for the doctrine of the trinity or triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each entity of God distinct and yet each making up One God.
Psalm 8 then begins with the due worship of God as creator of all we see including the Universe. It then states, “Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have established strength because of your foes to still the enemy and avenger” (Psalm 8:2). This could be referring to the people of Isreal who were see as weak in comparison to the gentile unbelieving nations they faced (ESV footnote). However, as I review the world today, this could also be referring to us as believers today in the face of unbelievers. How many times have believers been called childish for believing in myths? Mindless? Weak? Yet through the Word of God, we have strength to speak and put to shame those who mock us.
The same God who created the entire Universe gave us a place of honor and put us in charge of all creation to care for it (Psalm 8:4-8; Genesis 1:26). From the beginning of time, God did not ignore man. God created all of creation for man to marvel at and care for.
Psalm 104 continues the worship of God who created the Universe. It also glorifies in each stage of creation, touching on the works done by God each day. Verses 2 through 4 speaks to the light and dividing the expanse separating it from the waters (days 1 and 2, Genesis 1). Then it speaks of the creation of the land and vegetation (verses 5-18, day 3). It moves on to speak of the moon the sun which mark time and seasons (verses 19-24, day 4). Verses 25-26 marvels at the creatures of the sea (day 5), while verses 21-24 make note of the creation of all creatures that walk the Earth including man (day 6).
Psalm 104 then becomes very relevant to us today. Verses 27-30, discuss how all creation is dependent upon God to provide for us. He provides us food, blessings, and safety. We become discouraged when we are separated from God, leading to physical and spiritual death. Yet through Christ and the Holy Spirit we can be renewed and recreated (Psalm 104:30). So, there is EVERY reason to worship the God of creation who will judge wickedness in righteousness.
